66-year-old Chaka Khan was selected to sing the national anthem at the NBA All-Star Game on February 16 and did not disappoint. The famous singer performed her incredible pipe as she played the United States anthem and she struck every note to perfection. Crowds and players gathered at the United Center in Chicago for the game as Chaka played the song. The native singer, Tennil Arts, was also roped in to sing “Oh, Canada”.
This year’s NBA All-Star Game had a ton of air, just as NBA star, Kobe Bryant was killed three weeks later in a helicopter crash with his 13-year-old daughter. Gianna. Kobe, Gianna and the other seven victims of the accident were on everyone’s mind by the evening. The event began with a special tribute performance by Jennifer Hudson, in which everyone was torn.
The captain of the NBA All-Star Game was LeBron James – whose team members wore Jianna’s basketball number (2) – and Giannis Entetocompompo – whose team members wore LeBron’s basketball number (24). There was also a patch with nine jerseys on the shoulder with all jerseys in honor of the nine people killed in the 26 January crash.
